How to Transfer Vehicle Registration in Victoria

When buying or selling a vehicle in Victoria, the registration must be transferred to the new owner within 14 days. Here is the complete process for both buyers and sellers.

Required Documents for Transfer

Seller must provide:

  • Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR)
  • Signed Application for Transfer (VR01)
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Photo ID

Buyer must provide:

  • Completed buyer section of VR01 form
  • Photo ID (driver's licence)
  • Proof of address
  • Payment for transfer fee and stamp duty

Step-by-Step Transfer Process

  1. 1

    Check the Vehicle's Registration Status

Before transferring, run a rego check to confirm the vehicle is currently registered and there are no alerts or restrictions. An unregistered vehicle cannot be transferred.

  2. 2

Obtain a Certificate of Roadworthiness (if required)

A roadworthy certificate (CoR) is required for most private vehicle transfers in Victoria. The seller is responsible for obtaining it from a Licensed Vehicle Tester (LVT). The certificate is valid for 30 days.

  3. 3

    Complete the Transfer Form

Both buyer and seller must complete the Application for Transfer of Registration (Form VR01). This form is available from VicRoads offices or can be completed online through myVicRoads.

  4. 4

    Seller Initiates the Transfer

The seller should log in to their myVicRoads account and click 'Vehicles & Registration' → 'Transfer Vehicle'. Alternatively, the seller can visit a VicRoads customer service centre.

  5. 5

    Buyer Completes the Transfer

The buyer must complete the transfer within 14 days of taking possession of the vehicle. Log in to myVicRoads, accept the transfer, and pay the applicable transfer fee.

  6. 6

    Pay the Transfer Fee

Transfer fees vary based on the vehicle's market value. As of 2024, the fee is $40.40 for vehicles valued up to $10,000, and increases for higher-value vehicles. Stamp duty may also apply.

Important: 14-Day Transfer Rule

In Victoria, the buyer must complete the transfer within 14 days of taking possession of the vehicle. Failure to do so may result in fines. The seller remains legally responsible for the vehicle until the transfer is completed.
